Building a Winning Team

So what does it take to build a winning team?

I'm going to be honest, right now, I feel like I'm on a winning team. Other points in my career, I think I've worked with some smart, talented people, but we weren't really a team. And so I put a lot of thought into what are the things that differentiate just a law firm from a true winning team.

And I think there's three things. There's talent, there's passion, and there's vision. The first is talent. You have to have talented people. If you don't have good lawyers, if you don't have good paralegals and support staff, you're not going to win. It's just the other side is good, the other side is talented, you have to have as much or more talent than they do.

But talent alone is not enough to win. You have to have passion. You have to really want it. You have to care enough about not just your clients, but about the pride in your work. We're going to work those weekends, you're going to work those nights, you're going to dig deep to find that winning strategy, that winning piece of evidence buried in the stack of documents they gave you. Without passion, all the town in the world doesn't do you any good.

But the third thing to be a team is you need a common vision. You all have to be pulling in the same direction.

You all have to have the same goal of where you're trying to go. If not, you're just going to be working across purposes. That's why at my firm, we actually spent two days working with our leadership team just on, "Why are we here? Why are we practicing? What are our true core values?"

Not what we want our core values to be, but what really makes us unique and different as a firm and make sure that we're all working hard and pulling the same direction.

So I really encourage you at your firm to go reflect and look at, "What is it we need to do to be a true winning team?"
